Aitutaki Bonefish ,Itu's Bones dvd, Fly fishing for Bonefish, Aitutaki Bonefish Flies, trophy bonefish,Fly fishing guides Aitutaki , fly fishing the cook islands

Hello
I hope you all liked the information and the photo of that huge 20lb + trout in last weeks newsletter (not the blog). Remember to sign up for Stu's newsletter - for news from the shop and vice, comps, prizes and fun.
This weeks blog is about the Aitutaki and the big bonefish, that many of my clients have been to and more are asking about.
All these post and news letters take time and effort, so feel free to shop with Stu's Fly Shop and support the passion.

Over 10 yrs ago I travelled to Raratonga. After a busy guiding season in NZ, it was time to escape the winter.
The cook islands were looking promising after a lot of research, the word bonefish and an image kept creeping into my head.
So a plan was hatched, new saltwater tying material arrived in the post along with good saltwater hooks I was slightly getting pumped up!

Realizing fly orders need filled, a pile of trout fly tying materials were packed as there was lots of trout fly orders for the following season.

Sitting in the sun at a resort, loving the heat of the sun on my skin.
Getting plenty strange looks as thousands of small brown pogo nymphs came from my vice.

As soon as a majority of my tying work was finished, out came the big boy hooks and the sparkly stuff!

Before long a figure was sneaking around the shores of Raratonga armed with a Sage 9 wgt, dreaming of grey torpedos.
With the help of some wonderful locals, pointing me in the correct direction, I would cast all sorts of saltwater flies into the water and catch quite a few different species of fish, some I never did learn the name of.
Before long realization kicked in, Raratonga was not the place to target Bonefish, the name Aitutaki Kept coming up, so I cut my stay short on Raro and was soon on a small plane to  Aitutaki.
Bonefish are bottom feeders - carp are known as the freshwater bonefish !

Aitutaki was instantly like finding a small piece of heaven, friendly locals, good food, bikes to hire and fishing.
After a phone call to the only guide on the island - who gave me the feeling he was very busy and could not guide me. But soon he came to his senses and realized he was not busy and was just had the old island lazy disease.
His wife must overheard the conversation and may even hit him on the head with a coconut to make him realize money was to be made..

For the next 6 days I enlisted his sevices and loved every fun minute of it.
Fishing hard and casting like a demon hoping to connect with a grey torpedo. Eventually after 3 days my first Aitutaki bone fish of around 7lbs came to my hands. Lost 5 others into coral where they all managed to bust me off or hang me up.
All up in the 7 days I landed 3 bones and lost 5. Looking back in my diary I sighted only 12 bonefish in all that time and I had perfect sight fishing weather..
On nearly everyday guided in the main lagoon, we encountered relatives of my casual guide. They were out netting fish, mainly targeting bonefish as it was a local tradition and the bones were a sought after pickled fish delicacy.

It was during my time of 13 days in total on the island I started to develop my bonefish shrimp and some other saltwater baitfish patterns. An old copy of Dick Browns bonefish book was also read every night and used as reference.
From which I learned if you have a bonefish heading into the coral, take the drag off and they will slow down and most of the time will stop.
Then gradually apply tension and try and steer them into the next blistering run away from the coral.
This technique I actually learned and practiced many years later on many bonefishing & fly design trips to Christmas islands, if only it had been applied on the Aitutaki bones, lost into the coral!

In the last 4yrs the Aitutaki bonefish fishery has changed dramatically.
A great DVD called Itu's Bones has been made featuring the new highly trained bonefish guides, the turn around with the fishery and it's history, not to mention the breath taking tropical views the island.
If you are thinking of heading that way I recommend you get a copy of it.

You now need a fishing license, the new guides are all kitted out and now are nearly fully booked every day.
From all the reports coming back from my clients who have been heading over, it is turning into a great fishery and a huge new tourist revenue for the island.

The fishing

Like one of my friends who had just returned said "people still go to Aitutaki think they will catch lots of bones and fall over them and it will be easy, just like big trout in New Zealand". It's not a numbers game in Aitutaki, it's fishery is all about quality and beauty.
There is a big chance that you may catch one of the biggest bonefish of you fly fishing life.
There is also a chance that you may catch a record breaking bonefish.
Some bonefish have been found years ago in the nets at 20+ lb.
The chances are you will catch one in 3-5 days fishing and will definitely see some big bones.
There are also plenty other species to fish for from the shore or a hired kayak.
One day when I was wading in the lagoon a huge black shadow similar to the size of a mini cooper car headed out of the lagoon towards the channel, a huge trevally! So you never know.

Aitutaki Bonefish- rods, reels, lines & flies

Bonefish Rods-

You may get some strong wind, you may have to cast a slightly heavy fly to get down, you may have to control a big bone, you may break a rod.

For these reason I suggest to take at least 2x 9wgt rods and if you are heading out on a day trip/afternoon for whahoo or tuna, trevally take also 10wgt.

Saltwater Reel

Take a good sealed drag reel with you and a spare is always recommended. Yes they need have plenty of backing as big bones love taking people well into the backing.
Both reels should also have a spare spool with them, rigged with backing and another line on it, for quick changing if needed.

Saltwater fly lines have a stiffer core to cope with the tropical heat.
So do not take your trout lines with you thinking they will do. They will not and will stick to the rod when casting. I know first hand of this money saving mistake.

Most of the fishing will be done with a floating line with a sinking tip. I would also recommend an intermediate line, especially if your fishing one of the 16 ft drop off areas that some bones like to cruse along.
The intermediate line will also be good if its windy and will help keep your fly on the bottom better.

Take at least two of each fly lines, as fly lines getting cut on coral is quite normal.
A trip in New Caledonia chasing bonefish one year, left me with two destroyed fly lines within 10 mins of each other, due to coral.

A selection of different weights and lengths will be needed. 15lb+ fluro carbon tippet has always worked for me on bigger fish and deeper water.
Heavier tippet for all the bigger fish you may encounter-  20- 30lb.

Aitutaki Bonefish Flies / Wahoo, Trevally,Tuna

Even very small bone fish can crush the best hooks.
Though you are going to have a much better chance if you have flies tied on good hooks with sharp points to help penetrate the hard mouths of  all saltwater fish. It's always best to take more than you think you will need. It's not unusual to lose 10 flies in a day for some people.
Remember if you are not used to saltwater fly fishing keep the rod down and strip strike - although its hard to remember after years of trout striking, where you raise the rod upwards.

Shrimp patterns - in a variety of sizes and weights - Pearl /Tan will be needed along with some worm, crab patterns.

After years of trail and error a new range of little "come and eat me " saltwater flies have been released.
They all sit on the bottom and have plenty of movement due to the materials used. These are becoming hot favorites of the guides in Aitutaki, some of Stu's Superior Flies where also featured in the great DVD Itus Bones.

A selection of baitfish flies again in various sizes are always recommend for the other species. Although some of the big bones that my customers have landed have been taken on the Big eye baitfish fly. As big bones love eating other fish.

I hope you found this informative, please feel free to share this information with your friends.

If you need more information or some equipment, Stu's Superior flies, lines, leaders, tippet for your trip please visit - www.stusflyshop.com

Since these bone fishing trips I have also worked as a saltwater fly fishing guide for a season in Australia where more knowledge about saltwater flies and tackle was  experienced.

Have a great trip.
Cheers
Stu

NZ TROUT, WILDERNESS FLY FISHING, NZ GUIDES, BIG BROWN TROUT, FLY TYING SALE, SAGE FLY ROD SALE

TROUT EVERYWHERE

Yes - the new season is under way and happy fishermen and women have been in the shop.
The Red Hot Killer Nymphs are the number one choice for most, followed by NZ Tungsten Gold Bead Mayfly Nymphs in smaller sizes. The wee bit of bling on these seems to work early season on the Southland rivers.
Lots of different guides have been in for their season stock up and it's always good to catch up with them and find out how their bookings are.
This is a time when most of the guides actually get a few days to fish, well the keen guides do.
For me that's a great thing to see guides who like me have fused their passion with their work still out there enjoying there passion.

A huge trout being released by my last client

Paul from Wanaka

was through yesterday and had  managed a 3/4 day out playing. He had managed to land 5 brown trout between 3-5lb and was pretty happy about that on his first day of the season.
If you are over that way in Wanaka and looking for a friendly knowledgeable guide check his services out www.aspiringflyfishing.co.nz

He was pretty disappointed that I was out of my black Ninja Nymphs as he was after dozens of them as they were his go to fly of the day and last season.
Which was great to hear that his clients had success with them, he was mainly fishing them of the back of a size 10 Mayfly Bomb connected by 5lb rio fluro plus tippet.
Hopefully I'll have the Ninjas back in stock soon.

It's spring and sometimes the young lambs don't make it to the barbie.
This one was eaten by some feral pests.
THE WEATHER

The weather here in Athol has actually been pretty settled and the main Mataura river has been mainly running clear. Snow has fallen on the mountains and some days it's cold. But already the birds are looking for nesting materials and spring is on its way.

Non Spooky Trout And Spooky!

Most of the trout at the start of the season will let you have a few casts over them, some trout that I was guiding some clients onto who were not so accurate let us try up to 20 times before they were hooked or not.
Though it was interesting to see some trout after 3 attempts learn pretty quickly.
Already I hear some of the larger wise trout on some rivers that have not been caught are moving off just after one fly drift past them - I love that stuff it just amazes me, that some how they know the season has opened, and seem to remember from previous seasons.

Check out these unique NZ Fishing Note books - a great gift

The Office

The days have been long in the office, busy working on some new cool stuff that soon you will get to know about.
I'm twitching to get on the vice but the paper work comes first - well so my accountant keeps telling me.

Great customer feedback - photos and comments.

Some of the biggest Bonefish have been caught on my designs!

Your flies are awesome.
Have a great season and will see you when I'm down poaching your Area!!!!!!!!!!!

The Waters Of Greenstone - new NZ DVD

Just in is a new DVD The Waters Of Greenstone and it's pretty cool that Stu's Fly Shop is on it. Check out one of the trailers.

ORETI RIVER - Vandal / Criminal Angler - Anglers

Well the much publicized Oreti river has been getting it's usual pounding at the start of the season and there is nothing wrong with that - it's a great river.

I was told the other day already people thinking it's their river and letting down the tyre of a vehicle that was parked on the top bridge - I'm not sure if this person was camped there all night, that's beside the point..

Things like this are not good for NZ, so if you saw anything please report the culprit to the police, fingers have been pointed but no evidence, there was a few people around that day at the top bridge, someone knows something - we are fishermen not vandals - come on guys! Lucky the guy had a spare.

Remember

If you have the book the trout diaries - read it again and get your juices flowing.
The author will be through to sign books in the shop, so if you do not have a copy of  this book - if you get one from me it will be signed - and may be worth $$$$$ in the future ?

Eddie with one of his big browns before he fell in!

Eddie the Shower King!

The last time I guided Eddie he fell over in the middle of the river and went right under. What was strange he just fell over it was a flat sand bottom.
Being professional I did not laugh as I could see his man pride was hurt ! :) He made me promise not to tell anyone - especially his father back at the shop. Being myself - I have never told anyone!

After some years he returned to be guided again and lucky for us we picked the right day and he caught and lost some lovely big browns.
He also nearly fell in again, but he is a fun guy so having to carry an extra towel with me when I guide him is now just part of my job. Oh and he is not old! He is just a wobbly kind of guy! :) - I sure hope he will not read this - or his friends :) :)

Here is a few photos of the days guiding the other day we got most of the fish on size 12 NZ grey Realistic Mayfly Nymphs off a size 8 bomb as the water was deep and we need a heavy bomb to get the smaller nymph down.

Australia - High Country outfitters in Jindbyne NSW

are stockiest of my flies and their orders are getting bigger and bigger.
Which is awesome as they have supported me right from the start as they know quality.
If you are in their area check out their shop and services. So if you know or are a cool fly shop that wants to stock my Superior fly range contact me or Ela.

Well best get to the shop and get my open flags out!

Cheers,

Stu & Ela

NZ FLY FISHING SEASON OPEN,NZ KILLER NYMPHS,DEADLY NZ CICADA,KING POGOS,FLY CASTING,

Hello Happy people :)

THE SHOP

Yes - we are open again and rocking my home town of Athol! The shop will be open nearly every day throughout the season that is possible.
Ela is helping all season, so if I'm out guiding or busy you will always find the shop open, which I have struggled a bit with in past years without help.
So we look forward to seeing all you happy people in the shop again this season and no doubt a few miserable folks as well.
It's funny that some people spend all there lives in doom and gloom!
Today was the first day of opening and the few people that came through were guides after Superior flies and local catch and grill wormers after licences.
The worm fishers will have a ball on the first day of the season as the good old worm is deadly especially if the waters clear and the fish have seen no anglers all winter. Tomorrow in the shop I expect a few people smelling a bit fishy which is much better than BO.

 SOME NEW PRODUCTS

- Check out the New full package airflow and reel combo sets and  full sets for beginners
- Check out the new calenders
- Check out the ipad trout art covers
- Check out the trout art redneck buffs- great for the sun or insects

RIVERS -The Trout

The fish and game rangers came past and gave me all the info on  what's been going on with the spawning of trout and salmon and drift dive counts on some rivers, it's always good to get inside info.
The upper Mataura for the first time in over 30yrs dried up in mid winter which was not to good for fish stocks,  so most upper reaches of southland rivers got hit with a winter drought which made allot of trout head down stream earlier than usual in the main rivers and small holding waterways.

MAGAZINE CATCH UP

If you are looking for a new magazine to come through the post 4 x a year have a look at the cult fly fishing magazine - The Drake
The complete Fly Fisher -African magazine is a close second choice, full of different content and plenty travel content.
Fly Life - another great magazine - though after looking through the latest edition seem to have been taken over by a bunch of NZ article writers working for a tackle company. Only promoting their products in a smart way which is a smart game plan, I only hope they are not fooling all the readers as they have already done it with the F&G magazine here in NZ. (That's my winters bitch:) -before the season starts).

ORDERS

All the orders are going out the same day and again I thank you all for waiting on the shop opening. You are all awesome.

NEW - Stu's Deadly Hi-Viz NZ Cicada

-size 8 and 10 in stock- Yes the colour the tussock fly fishermen have been after for many years - chartreuse.
Remember 95% of flies sold in shops and on line are on poor hooks- that's not the case with my flies, they are all only on Tiemco hooks- well proven on big fish!

WHAT FLIES THE PRO GUIDES ARE BUYING UP!

Nearly all the internet orders from guides and in the shop for the start of the season have been buying up!
- Stu's NZ Mayfly Bombs
- Stu's NZ Realistic mayfly nymphs
- Stu's NZ Killer Nymphs
- Stu's King pogos
- Hi -Viz Black Deadly Cicadas - for sight flys and attractors.

WEATHER

Since getting back a week ago the weather has been awesome, shorts and t-shirts in the afternoons. This weather pattern has helped us get all the grass cut and the shops casting area tidied up.
Which was a good thing as I have been busy doing a few casting lessons. This weeks forecast does not look too good with rain forecast most of the week. This will not stop all the die hard fishers who have taken time out to slay every trout, good luck to you all. To make it more appealing all the rivers are now clear down this way and are at normal flows!

GUIDING

I'm out guiding tomorrow, which is the first day of the season with two new clients, hopefully we can brave the wind, rain and fool a few wild browns.
A few dates for guiding and casting lesson are available before Dec, so contact me asap if you want to hire my services.
It may be very small the shop - but it will surprise most!
Just like my dads wallet - George my dad, in the shop before his 98th Birthday!

ELA QUEEN OF FACEBOOK

Ela has been busy helping me with facebook. Please if you are on Facebook give her all the help you can, with cool fish photos and details of what superior fly you caught it on etc.

Have a great fun season, day, week or year
Cheers

New SAGE rod, NZ Fly Fishing Schools, Stu's Superior Flies, RISE film fest, Gin Clear, start of the season

Teaching pt. II
We have just been traveling through India, filming & photographing fishing as we went with the odd bit of teaching fly casting to some locals and travelers. Now in Nepal doing the same but hampered by the monsoon weather- like in India - which has made things harder to get the footage and shots.
A good quote out of the newspaper today
I have yet again learned so much more this year and I take my hat off to all the local guides and fisherman_women who have showed me their local methods and tricks to fool fish and posed for my photos!
This will be the dinner - for the whole family!
Check out the crystal bait fish design that the predator fish (Mahseer) love!

Check out the NZ RISE Fly Fishing Film Festival Sept dates!

NZ Fly Fishing Schools, Stu's Casting Lessons, Ela's Fly Fishing School, Mahseer

Introducing Ela / Teaching
Normally it all seems a bit rushed in a way, due to clients, time limits when it comes to my casting tuition and fly fishing schools. Even if it's spread over 2 or 3 days. With Ela traveling over a long time and being very keen to learn about fly fishing i have been experimenting with a new approach to my teaching methods, (a new game plan!)

For the past 2 months Ela has been learning mainly about the flies, equipment and aquatic life of the food of trout. But still i have not given her a fly rod or taught her anything about casting as of yet. The foundations at the moment to me seem really solid doing it this way over time. Ela has decided to share with you on the blog some of what she's been learning along the way. I'm sure you will all enjoy her journey into the world of fishing and fly fishing!

Stu overseas testing some new equipment
It's Ela here from Stu's Fly Shop. I'm on the road with Stu & his fly rod vice (he is busy working on new fly designs) now for 3 months - it's time for the newbie's next blog!

As Stu is a natural born teacher and i'm keen to learn more about the fly fishing mystery, i asked him to share his knowledge with me. We've had plenty of time - in 28 hours bus rides, at overcrowded trains (it's always nice to have more audience) or at a sun-kissed balcony with a nice chai tea.
An Indian advert - brilliant
So i bought myself a student notebook, pens and here we go:
As i knew nearly nothing about fishing, insects & the hardware, Stu started with the basics. I felt like I'm a student again - all new for me! I practiced my hand-writing skills and soon had to buy new pens (as the indian ones' don't last too long)
After each lesson, i was tested the day after - back in school again, dudes!
Studies, studies, studie
Watching Stu at the river showing off his casting skills helped me a lot to combine theory & practice of the whole fly fishing thing.
Soon there came the day when Stu went out to discover new waterways and improved his casting skills - it was early in the morning- i went with him and his guide to learn more by watching - i thought.

As Stu went upstream by himself quickly, the "Ghillie" (yes, i had to call my guide Ghillie) decided to teach me! I was quite surprised but didn't had time to think about it 'cause the Ghillie handed me a fly line on a wooden stick (aka the reel)! He taught me how to use it, there was something stinky at the end of the line, they use a special formula of pattie- called "Raggie" to catch fish here!
Yummie - Raggie
A minute later i had a first nibble, i casted the line out and within seconds it happened - i caught my first fish!!! As i was so exited about this, i nearly dropped the fish!
My first Mahseer!!!
At the time Stu came back from his fishing, i already caught 7 fish in 3 hours - not too bad for me, who never did fishing before- both of Stu's arms are sore from casting and he had not even seen a fish! Maybe i should teach him.
Look at this big fellow :)
Stu's Superior Flies - the most TRUSTED name in fly fishing flies" is stoked to be a sponsor of RISE FLY FISHING FESTIVAL 2012  - check out the advert here

That's it for today, i hope you enjoyed the story of Ela getting pimped up to answer all your questions from October, 1st @ Stu's Fly Shop

Dates are filling fast so if you want to book Stu for October, November or December, please contact him soon.
See you all soon, have a great time, enjoy the time!
Cheers,
Ela

New SAGE CIRCA fly rod, RIO NZ, NZ fly fishing school, RISE fly fishing film festival

Hello,
Well- as most of you know- the fly shop is closed at the moment and will be re-open as usual in mid September.
Internet is not so easy to find here and power cuts are frequent. I never thought i would be able to update the blog but low & behold, a few updates and one newsletter should be with you, before the grand pre-opening of Stu's fly shop in September.
I saw this on a wall near the river. Apparently there's fish in the river the locals told me.

SAGE fly rods - i hear-  have taken best new fly rod at the big European show. Something and which they manage to do time & time again. Last year they did it with the ONE fly rod this year its a mid priced quality rod called the Circa fly rod which replaces the ZXL series.
RIO products in New Zealand have a new agent and who could be better for the job than Don Fraser - the long-time ex-SAGE agent and owner of  Guide quality NZ Ltd. In case some of you do not know SAGE for the past few years own RIO fly lines and products. So it makes total sense to be all in house in NZ, so expect better pricing and easier access to new products in New Zealand.
No doubt - some of the new rods will be in stock for the start of the season and any new RIO fly fishing products!
It's been all go most days with some huge travel days on some interesting smelly public transport. I have managed to finish a few new fly designs which in due course you'll all got to view and use.
My right arm is still troubled with pain from too much casting in the USA last winter for Musky. Having not been casting as much as i would like to, it's a pain. But still i'm chasing fish whenever i get a chance. Hopefully the photos will tell tales!

Best we double check the knots. We may only get one chance.
I'm traveling with two of the new ECHO instructor fly rods a 6wgt & a 8wgt which i'm doing my best to break on any fish. Some of you would have seen the photo that i posted on facebook with that nice big bend on the white 8wgt rod, now that was a dream day for me. The saltwater SAGE reels drag was on max and two hands were gripped to the cork handle.

Ela - who i'm traveling with- and myself have been also busy shooting lots of amazing photos for magazines and advertising
as well as some exiting interesting film footage for a future film. Working with some guides and local people has been fun and it's been very rewarding helping a few of them with their fly casting & fly fishing skills.
Keeping my hands in with casting tuition keeps me on my game even when on the road. (I hope!)
Many hours and days have been spent working with helping Ela and her quest to become a world of knowledge on fly fishing and fly casting, we hope to release footage and photos of her progress - or not!!

She's a fast learner compared to most of us men. I'm sure when you meet her again this coming season in the shop / or NZ fly fishing schools she will blow you all away again and if not, there's always a spinning rod for her!

This hotel manager wasn't really cooperative.
If you are looking for a good non fishing book to read, then maybe try sourcing- Lance Armstrong "Every Second Counts" - i just finished it on a day of rain in my tent and it was a very enjoyable read.

If you want to get off the couch this winter get yourself along to the RISE fly fishing film festival which Stu's Superior Flies Ltd. is proud to be sponsoring along with other great brands. Here are the dates & venues:
